Train Ride & Self Exploration

My whirlwind day trip to Brussels from Amsterdam began bright and early with a 7am train. By 9am, I arrived in the Belgian capital, greeted by pouring rain that set the tone for a cozy and adventurous day. After a quick stroll near the train station, I caught an Uber to the heart of the city: Grand Place.

Despite the dreary weather, Grand Place was breathtaking. The square is surrounded by stunning historic buildings, their gold embellishments glinting even in the rain. The intricate architecture and rich history made it easy to see why this UNESCO World Heritage site is so beloved. Before my tour began, I treated myself to a warm Belgian waffle-a delicious start to my day.

Walking Food Tour

I had booked a tour through GetYourGuide called Brussels: Walking tour with Belgian Lunch, Chocolate, and Beer, and it was incredible-knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about sharing Brussels’ rich history. As we wandered through the city, I was constantly in awe of the beautiful architecture and the stories behind it.

The tour included stops at three artisanal chocolate shops where we sample and array of chocolates. Each piece was unique, but the standout for me was the champagne truffle-an indulgent treat I still think about. For lunch, we enjoyed a classic Belgian meal and sides. The mussels, served in a flavorful broth, were surprisingly delicious for someone who isn’t a big seafood fan. However, the true star was the meatballs, served with a cherry sauce and a side of apple sauce-a combination that was absolutely phenomenal. Chef’s kiss.

After lunch, we continued exploring the city and ended the tour at a charming promenade. Here, indulged in another Belgian Waffle and what can only be described as the best hot chocolate I have ever had. The rich, velvety drink was the perfect way to wrap up the tour. I also had the chance to chat with some lovely fellow travelers, which made the experience even more memorable.

A Few More Solo Hours

Before heading back to the train station, I went on a mission to find the famous Manneken Pis, a quirky statue of a boy peeing that has become as Brussels icon. Sometimes dressed in costumes, we was appropriately clad in a raincoat during my visit-a fitting choice for the weather! I wrapped up my time in Brussels with some souvenir shopping before boarding my train back to Amsterdam.

Back to Amsterdam

While the train ride back was scenic, it wasn’t entirely pleasant-my seatmate was coughing up a storm, and unfortunately, I ended up getting sick. Even worse, in an attempt to get off the train quickly, I left my souvenirs on the train! Between the rain, my souvenirs, and my neighbor’s germs, my day ended on a less-than-ideal note, but it didn’t dampen my love for Brussels.

Final Thoughts

The vibrant city is packed with history, culture, and unforgettable flavors. While you can definitely experience Brussels in a day, it’s a place worth savoring with more time. I can’t wait to return to Belgium and explore more of its cities. If you’re planning a visit, make sure you come prepared with a game plan and don’t miss the chance to enjoy its world-famous chocolate, waffles, beer, and unique charm!
