Ketchikan, Alaska, was one of the stops on my Celebrity Summit cruise, and while it wasn’t my favorite port, it had some memorable highlights worth sharing.
As soon as we disembarked, we found ourselves in a lively area filled with souviner shops and restaurants. It’s and easy spot to explore on foot, with plenty to see, including the opportunity to catch the famous Lumberjack Show. Though I didn’t get a chance to see it, it’s definitely on my list for next time!
A Scenic Ride to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary
Our adventure truly began with a bus ride to the Alaska Rainforest Santuary. Along the way, we were treated to incredible views of bald eagles soaring overhead and glimpses of luxury superyachts docked along private homes.
Once we arrived, the sanctuary felt like stepping into another world. The lush, green rainforest was breathtaking, and the salmon run cutting through the scenery made it a prime spot for wildlife. This was where our bear-watching excursion began, and it turned out to be one of the most unforgettable experiences of the trip.
Up Close with Black Bears
We were lucky to spot 7-10 black bears during our excursion, including an adorable cub hunting with its mom. Some were napping, while others were actively hunting for salmon or feasting on their catches. Watching these majestic creatures in their natural habitat was both thrilling and humbling. It’s not every day you get to witness a bear catching its lunch in real time!
Further along our hike, we visited a salmon fishery and got to explore the history of the totem poles in the area. We also were surprised with a visit from a precious little harbor seal. It was a magical moment that added even more charm to an already remarkable day in the rainforest.
Exploring Downtown Ketchikan
Back in town, we strolled along Creek Street, known for its colorful shops and picture-perfect setting. While Creek Street is undeniably picturesque, the downtown area felt overly touristy to me. However, it;s a convenient spot for last-minute souvenirs and snacks.
Final Thoughts
Ketchikan may not have been my favorite Alaskan town, but the beauty of its rainforest and the thrill of bear watching made it a standout experience. If you’re visiting, I’d highly recommend exploring the Alaska Rainforest Sactuary and leaving time to catch the Lumbarjack Show for a little local flavor.
Would I return? For the rainforest and wildlife, absolutely. For the downtown tourist hub? Probably not. But that’s the beauty of travel-every destination offers something unique, and Ketchikan’s wilderness is a treasure you won’t want to miss.
