Sitka, Alaska, left me with memories that are as wild as its landscapes. Our day began with a thrilling zodiac adventure that promised both excitement and an up-close encounter with the natural beauty and wildlife of the region.
We suited up in weather gear, ready for anything the day might bring. From the first moment we set out on the water, the views were nothing short of spectacular. The deep blues of the ocean, framed by rugged coastlines and snow-dusted peaks, provided the perfect backdrop for the wildlife we encountered.
We were fortunate to see stellar sea lions basking on rocky outcrops, playful otters floating serenely, and harbor porpoises cutting through the waves. Eagles soared overhead, and the water revealed clusters of vibrant ochre sea stars. But the most breathtaking-and heart-pounding-moment came when whales surfaced about 30 yards from us. Seeing the majestic creatures up close was a mix of awe and exhilaration, a moment I will never forget.
After the wildlife tour, we made our way to Finn Island for a culinary treat. The lunch spread was incredible: succulent prime rib, perfectly cooked salmon, fresh crab legs, and the most delightful salmon chowder I have ever tasted (I typically HATE salmon). As we enjoyed the meal, we also tried out a few Alaskan beers/ciders. Alaska Ciderworks Northwind Cider checks all of my boxes and complimented the seafood very well. Finn island itself was a paradise. We had the opportunity to beach comb, sit by the fire, and soak in the serene beauty of the surroundings before heading back to the dock.
Once we got back, we explored the small shopping area on the pier. We decided to take a bus into town, where the quaint streets beckoned us to explore further. Although we didn’t have much time, I wished we could have lingered longer and sampled more of the local flavors Sitka has to offer.
My time in Sitka was a perfect blend of adventure, nature, and delicious food-a true Alaskan experience that left me eager to return someday to see more of this incredible town.
