Exploring Seward Alaska, was the final chapter of my Alaskan adventure, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. We disembarked the ship and decided to spend three days soaking in everything this scenic town had to offer.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

After picking up our rental car, we set out on a spontaneous drive to explore the area. Our route took us to Kenai Fjords National Park, where we hiked to Exit Glacier. The views were stunning! We hiked to the top then back down to the rocky area beneath the glacier. Seeing the glacier up close, with a rushing river flowing beneath it, it was awe-inspiring. On our way back, we saw a school field trip hiking thr same trail, and I couldn’t help but to think how incredible it would be to grow up with such beauty as your classroom. Afterward, we explored downtown Seward before heading to our cozy accommodations at the Windsong Lodge.

Day 2: The Ultimate Sled Dog Experience

This was the day I’d been waiting for-and it did not disappoint. Our adventure began as we pulled up to a secluded cabin in the woods, Seaveys IdidaRide. At first it was eerily silent, but as we got closer, the barking of sled dogs echoed through the trees, growing louder with each step.

Meeting the dogs was pure joy. They were so excited to run, and it was clear how well-loved and cared for they were. We learned all about the Seavey family, legends in the dog sledding world, and the grueling demands of the 1,000 mile Iditarod race. The Seavey family has won 9 of the last 10 Iditarods, so learning directly from the family was incredible. I even got to try on the heavy musher’s gear and stand on the sled-it’s no joke! After a fascinating history lesson, we got to cuddle some adorable puppies (which definitely helped me ease my homesickness for my own pup, Beef).

Then it was time for the ride. The dogs were ready to go, jerking the sled forward in their eagerness. Once the gates opened, we whisked through narrow paths and around tight turns, learning about each dog’s personality and role. This experience exceeded my every expectation, and while I’ll be back to try it in the snow someday, this dirt-path ride with the Seaveys was unforgettable. If you listen to just one piece of my advice, please go visit Seaveys Ididaride!

Later that day, we attempted a hike but decided to turn back at a tricky waterfall crossing. We wrapped up the day with a little bar crawl through Seward and dinner at our hotel’s restaurant, where we got an unexpected wildlife show-a moose wandered right into the parking lot! Seeing such a majestic animal up close was magical.

Day 3: Saying Goodbye in Style

For my final day in Alaska, we visited the Alaska SeaLife Center, a must-see for any animal lover. I checked a bucket list item off by seeing puffins up close! I also loved the touch tank, where I could interact with sea urchins, sea stars, and anemones.

While my parents headed to Homer, I stayed in Seward to enjoy a relaxing afternoon. I treated myself to a crab leg lunch by the marina and spent the rest of the day walking through town, shopping, and sitting by the harbor, watching the seals swim by as I read. It was the most peaceful, content moment I’ve had in a long time.

That evening, I board Alaska Railway’s glass-domed train to Anchorage. The ride was breathtaking, with views of glaciers, lakes, mountains, and wildlife pointed out by the conductor. I even shared a meal with a friendly family who let me take photos from their side of the train (for Seward to Anchorage, sit on the left side for the best views!).

Sadly, my journey ended with a 35-hour long travel day filled with delays and a missed connection, but even that couldn’t dampen the magic of my time in Alaska.

Seward was the perfect ending to an unforgettable adventure. From stunning glaciers to heartwarming dog sledding experiences, it’s a place that will forever hold a special place in my heart. Exploring Seward Alaska was nothing less than incredible. If you’re planning a trip to Alaska, don’t miss this incredible town!
