Icy Strait Point, near the small village of Hoonah, is a fascinating cruise stop that blends a manufactured tourist destination with opportunities to experience Alaska’s natural beauty and abundant wildlife. While some parts of the area cater heavily to cruise passengers, I was pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see and do besides the main attractions.

Planning Ahead

One of the most popular activities here is the zip line-an exhilarating ride boasting incredible views as you zoom down the mountainside. Unfortunately, it sells out quickly, so I recommend booking it well in advance. Since I couldn’t secure a spot, I opted for the gondola ride to the top of the mountain instead.

The Gondola Adventure

The gondola ride itself was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Suspended high above the ground, it offered breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness and water. On the way up, we were lucky enough to spot whales in the distance-a magical moment that highlighted the area’s reputation for wildlife sightings.

At the top, we did a short hike to a serene mountain lake. The trail was peaceful, and the views were well worth the effort. Rather than taking the gondola back down, we decided to hike along the water. This was an incredible decision-the path eas stunning, with gorgeous vistas at every turn. Along the way, we spotted an eagle’s nest high in the trees, which was a special highlight.

A scenic Walk Toward Hoonah

Wanting to see more, we continued our walk along the water toward Hoonah. The path was just as breathtaking, offering views of the sea and countless seals playing in the water nearby. While we didn’t make it all the way to the city, the journey itself was rewarding, surrounded by nature at every step.

Relaxing by the Fire

Back at Icy Strait Point, we stopped by a cozy bar with a welcoming fire pit. We enjoyed local beer and reindeer chili-a unique dish that was gamey but flavorful. It was the perfect way to warm up and reflect on the day’s adventures.

Beachcombing & Whales

To end the day, I wandered down the beach to explore. The tide had receded dramatically, exposing a fascinating array of sea life. I found vibrant sea stars and countless tiny plankton washed ashore. As I sat on the beach, whales began surfacing just offshore, their spouts and tails visible against the fading light. It was a serene and unforgettable moment that perfectly captured the magic of Alaska.

Final Thoughts

While Icy Strait Point is undoubtedly tailored for cruise passengers, it offers plenty of opportunities to connect with Alaska’s natural beauty. From whale sightings to unique local goods and scenic trails, this stop proved to be beautiful. For those visiting, I recommend planning ahead for popular activities like the zip line, but also leaving time to explore and embrace the stunning surroundings.
