Exploring Amsterdam is one of my favorite things to do. Amsterdam holds a special place in my heart. It’s more than a beautiful city; it’s a connection to my family, my heritage, and some of my most cherished memories. My mom was born in the Netherlands, and much of our family still lives there. I visited Amsterdam in 2017 with my mom, just before embarking on Semester at Sea. That trip ignited a love for the city and a deep desire to return-especially during tulip season.
When my parents planned a transatlantic cruise ending in Amsterdam, I couldn’t resist tagging along. Here’s a recap of my adventure.
Arrival in Amsterdam
I took a red-eye flight and, upon landing, hopped a train to Central Station. My hostel, St. Christopher’s Inn, was about a mile and a half walk from there-a trek I won’t forget, thanks to the cobblestone streets and heavy luggage! Since I arrived too early to check in, I spent the morning wandering the city. Exploring Amsterdam on foot is one of the best things to do. The peaceful canals, charming bridges, and quiet early-morning streets made for a perfect introduction to my trip.
After a drink and snack at the hostel, I visited the Artis Zoo, nestled in the heart of the city. Though I’d seen before, it’s a favorite spot I couldn’t resist revisiting. That evening, I headed to my cousin’s bar, Cafe Wiener, located in the Red Light District. It’s a cozy, local favorite-especially during futbol season-and I high recommend stopping by if you’re in town.
Exploring Amsterdam’s Countryside
Bike riding in Amsterdam’s bustling city center terrifies me, so I opted for a guided countryside bike tour through Get Your Guide instead. It was a fantastic decision! The ride took me past picturesque landscapes, grazing cows (my favorite), and iconic windmills. We even stopped at a cheese farm to sample some local treats. It felt like stepping back in time, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of the Dutch countryside.
Afterward, I treated myself to poffertjes (mini pancakes)-warm, fluffy, and absolutely delicious.
Reuniting with Family and Friends
When my parents arrived, we settled into a canal-front Airbnb and dove into a whirlwind of reunions. Our first stop was a family barbecue in Wilnis, complete with sheep, a mini horse, and a firelit evening of music and laughter.
The following day, I finally visited the Van Gogh Museum after years of anticipation. Seeing his masterpieces in person was breathtaking, and I also discovered the work of Matthew Wong, whose art moved me deeply. From there, we explored the Albert Cuyp Market, indulging in fresh food and the must-try stroopwafels.
We ended the day with a canal ride and bar crawl, soaking in the city’s charm from the water.

Tulips, Pancakes, and Heineken
No trip to the Netherlands would be complete without tulips. Though we missed the full bloom of the Keukenhof fields, the gardens were still stunning. Pro tip: visit earlier in the season to catch the flowers in all their glory.
Back in Amsterdam, we enjoyed pannekoeken, savory dutch pancakes stuffed with goodies like speck (similar bacon) and cheese-a dish I dream about long after leaving.
The Heineken Experience was another highlight, blending history, interactive exhibits, and, of course, beer tastings. It’s a must for any beer enthusiast or history buff!
Family Bonding and Farewell
We met more family members for lunch at an old fort and enjoyed catching up. I was thrilled to finally communicate more easily with my younger cousins, as our language barriers had improved since my last visit. I hope to host them one day-they’re intrigued by American life and, amusingly, Walmart! After lunch, we visited another cousin’s workplace for drinks before ending the evening back at Cafe Wiener, where my parents got their first taste of this beloved spot.
Our final days were filled with more family reunions, including a trip to Marken and Volendam, where we donned traditional Dutch attire for photos-a fun and laugh-filled experience. Exploring Amsterdam means so much more to me when I have my family there to show me the best places.
