If you’re anything like me–an avid Disney lover who’s always on the hunt for those lesser-known experiences–then let’s talk about one of Animal Kingdom’s best-kept secrets: Rafiki’s Planet Watch.
Tucked away right next to the entrance to Kilimanjaro Safaris, you’ll spot a sign for Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Most guests walk right past in–but don’t make that mistake! Take the winding path and hop aboard the Wildlife Express Train, which takes you on a short, relaxing ride through Animal Kingdom’s backstage conservation area. Honestly, I love getting a peek behind the curtain–it really gives you a deeper appreciation for how much work goes into caring for the animals here.
Once yo arrive, you’ll take a short walk along a shaded trail. Along the way, you’ll find a Wilderness Explorers stop (badge collectors, take note!) and some interesting conservation facts displayed on signs–perfect for curious kids and adults alike.

At the end of the trail, you’ll arrive at the Affection Section, a petting zoo with friendly goats, donkeys, pigs, and sheep. They even have brushes so you can help groom them, which is such a sweet and calming experience. There’s also a gorgeous longhorn in the back that is definitely worth saying hi to.
Just outside the main building, you’ll find animal exhibits including a huge Komodo dragon and a python, safely enclosed for you to admire. Inside the building, there are more fascinating critters–think insects and yes, even arachnids (hello, tarantulas).
But one of the most incredible features of Rafiki’s is the veterinary treatment area. Here, you can actually watch some of Disney’s real veterinarians in action. They have a CT scan room, an x-ray room, and small procedure room–all visible through large viewing windows. If you time it right, you may even get to see a life veterinary procedure or radiograph being done. Check with Guest Experiences in the park for a better understanding of the schedule for the day! It’s such a unique experience and a beautiful reminder of how deeply Disney cares for its animals.
Animation Experience
Also inside this building is one of my favorite interactive experiences: The Animation Experience at Conservation Station. An actual Disney animator teaches you how to draw a Disney character, and they characters rotate at every showtime. I’ve done this before and had an absolute blast–you even get to take your drawing home as a free souvenir! (And let’s be real, who doesn’t want to learn how to draw Rafiki!)

Final Thoughts
Whether you’re a Disney die-hard, an animal lover, or just looking for a peaceful break from the crowds, Rafiki’s Planet Watch is the perfect place to slow down and reconnect with the magic behind the scenes. The cast members are incredibly passionate, and if you ask questions, they light up with excitement. It’s one of those special corners of Disney’s Animal Kingdom that often gets overlooked–but it’s absolutely worth the time.
Pro Tip: to check showtimes for the animation classes, check the My Disney Experience app.
So next time you’re in Animal Kingdom, don’t just race from the safari to Expedition Everest–make time for Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Trust me, it’s an underrated gem that adds so much more to your day at the park.
