If you’re looking for an unforgettable character dining experience at Walt Disney World that brings bold flavors and immersive theming, Tusker House in Disney’s Animal Kingdom should be at the top of your list. This African-inspired buffet offers an immersive mix of flavors, fun, and Disney Magic – and spoiler alert: I found the best mac and cheese I have ever had in my life her. Yes, really.
Theming: Like Stepping Into an African Safari Outpost
The moment you step into Tusker House, it feels like you’ve been transported to a bustling village somewhere in East Africa. It’s rustic, colorful, and fill of travel-worn charm – like you’re just moments away from hopping into a safari jeep. From the worn wood beams to the weathered signs, Disney nailed the immersive theming. I genuinely felt like I was on an African adventure, waiting for my guide to arrive.
And then in comes Donald Duck in safari gear – now that’s a safari I’d sign up for again and again.
This is a character dining buffet, and you’ll get to meet Donald, Mickey, Goofy, and Daisy – all dressed in their safari best. The characters rotate through tables and even host a little dance party while you dine, which is adorable whether you’re a kid or just a kid at heart (hi, that’s me).
Our server, Melissa, was phenomenal. She gave us the inside scoop on the buffet favorites and treated us like VIPs. Seriously, cast members like her make the Disney difference.

Food: A Bold Buffet with Global Flavors… and One Life-Changing Mac & Cheese
Tusker House serves up a variety of African-inspired dishes that encourage you to explore outside of your usual palate. The buffet included options like:
- Green curry shrimp
- Berbere-marinated pork
- Tandoori chicken
- Braised beef tajine
- Spicy meatballs (not too spicy – just flavorful!)
I usually don’t like pork, but that berbere-marinated pork was chef’s kiss – tender, flavorful, and absolutely something I’d go back for. The meatballs were another favorite: warm spices, just enough kick, and super satisfying.
They also offer a fantastic breads and dips selection (hello, foodie’s dream). The standout here? The honey rosemary roti – sweet, herbaceous, and seriously addictive.
But let’s talk about the kid’s section for a second. I am a little embarrassed to admit it, but the baked mac and cheese was the true star of the show.
This wasn’t your basic Disney mac – no, this had a bubbling, golden cheesy crust that dreams are made of. I’m not exaggerating when I say: It was the best mac and cheese I’ve ever had in my life. Yes, it came from the kid’s buffet. No, I have no regrets.
Dessert-wise, I was pretty full, but I managed to snag a blondie from the dessert table. I thought it was a classic chocolate chip at first – but I’m pretty sure it had cherries too, which made it even more unique and delicious.
Heads-up: If you’re a picky eater, you will need to step slightly outside your comfort zone here. But that’s the beauty of a buffet – try a little of everything and go back for your favorites.

Overall Experience:
Between the unique flavors, incredible character interactions, and immersive setting, Tusker House is easily one of the most memorable character meals at Walt Disney World. Every character spent quality time with our table – hugs, photos, a little dancing – the works. I don’t even like kids (ha), but I make sure to keep my character interactions short and sweet to give the kiddos more time.
Plus, if you’re waiting for your table, swing by the Dawa Bar just outside the restaurant for a pre-dinner drink. It’s a hidden gem with great vibes and strong pours.
Final Rating: 8.7/10
Tusker House delivers in a big way, and I’d absolutely return – if only to fill my plate with that mac and cheese again. Whether you’re traveling with kids, fellow foodies, or just doing Disney your way, this is a stop worth making.
